Surrey football star heads down south

Earlier this month, Surrey football player Jonathan Kongbo agreed a deal with the University of Tennessee.

When Kongbo began playing football as a Grade 12 student at Surrey’s Holy Cross regional secondary school, he was not sure whether or not he would make it to the big leagues, but his on-field instincts, speed and determination earned him attention from several schools, including Ole Miss, Southern California, Florida State and his eventual choice of Tennessee.

This young star had better get used to hearing the crowd chant his name and wave Signs and Posters in support of his success on the field. If he rises to the occasion with his new college team, there may even be other promotional items, such as custom Drinkware, jerseys and team Pens carrying his name and number.

Kongbo grew up playing basketball, and even played for the Holy Cross team, but by Grade 12, the school’s football coaches as well as its principal urged him to switch to football. They believed that his size and speed gave him a very good chance at earning a college scholarship.

Kongbo was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As the situation at home became serious as civil war ensued, his family immigrated to Canada in search of a safer future and better opportunities for their children. His father’s degree in agricultural sciences paved the way for him to accept a position as an inspector for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
