Surrey firefighters to turn unwanted holiday trees into green treasure

Back in 1988, The Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society first held its Tree Chip event, and it was so popular, it has continued to be held each year. It’s a volunteer driven activity, and can turn holidays trees into mulch and other materials.

Once the holiday season has come and gone, live evergreens that were former Christmas Trees can be taken to Surrey’s Newton Athletic Park. Here, the public can take advantage of this environmentally-friendly disposal option. A small donation is requested for each chipping service, and these will be collected and used to help support the society’s activities.

Before trees are brought to the site, members of the public have been asked to ensure that all wires, decorations, stands and other items are removed from the tree. Once they arrive, the team of volunteer firefighters will help them unload it and it will then be tossed into a large sized chipper.

The timings for the 2020 Tree Chip will run from 9am until 4pm, and drop-offs can be made at any time between. Small notes of thanks can be designed and prepped by a printing services company to give to each person who takes advantage of an offer this this, thanking them for their support.

January 4th will see this Surrey tradition return for another year.
