New youth park: great play for Surrey

Construction on a $1.34-million youth park is set to begin in November 2010 in downtown Surrey.

The park, designed by New Line Skate Parks Inc, promises to be the first of its type in the entire province and will be located in Tom Binnie Park next door to the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. The youth park facilities will contain a skate park, completely covered, plus a court for ball hockey, gardens and a unique pathway system.

New Line was the lowest of four bidders. The company boasts three other youth parks in Surrey. The Canadian government gave the city $486,585 to build the unique park. The balance of the $1.34 million will come from Surrey’s 2010 capital budget.

"We are committed to creating new opportunities for our youth to participate in healthy activities," said Mayor Dianne Watts, obviously pleased that Surrey is a provincial leader in building recreational facilities for youth on B.C.’s Lower Mainland.

Watts claims that the youth park suits the requirements of Surrey’s Sustainability charter and fits into the green plan with environmentally friendly filters to purify rain runoff before draining into storm sewers. The lighting at the year-round facility is designed to be energy efficient.

The covered park, which can be used rain or shine, will become a prime venue for youth related events, an economic injection for businesses in Surrey’s city centre such as caterers, music services, t-shirt vendors and silk screen companies and printers specializing in banner printing for special events.

Construction should be finished by April 2011.
