A decade ago, a Surrey project that helps to make sure everyone is warm during winter made its first deliveries, and it is returning for another year.
In 2011, Erica Beckstead and a group of volunteers first began the Whalley Santa Cause initiative. This initiative delivers care hampers filled with clothing and toiletries, and it has been noted that helping hands are needed to make this year's drive a success.
The volunteers will help with a variety of tasks, including the distribution of the hampers. They will be gift wrapped and then handed out to the homeless. The organizers have explained that the public can get involved by donating items such as trial-sized toiletries, toothbrushes and shampoo, and the contribution of gently used winter outer clothing, including toques and mittens will also be appreciated. Anyone who would like to make a contribution is asked to make arrangements for this by contacting the organizers via phone.
Grassroots-level activities often make a real difference in a community. People can be encouraged to get involved in activities like this through the use of materials prepared by a local flyer printing company.
The Whalley Santa Cause event will take place on December 25th. The volunteers will meet up at the Gateway SkyTrain Station near the taxis, and everyone is asked to arrive by 1:00 pm.
