Writing contest seeks student submissions

The submission period is now open for the annual New Mountain Voice Student Writing Contest. The contest is sponsored by West Virginia Writers, Inc.

Students in grades one through 12 living in South Charleston and throughout the state of West Virginia, are encouraged to submit their stories and essays to the contest. Only residents of the state are eligible to participate.

Prizes are awarded to winners in three age groups, grade 1 to 5, grades 6 to 8, and grades 9 through 12. Although students have the choice of writing on any topic they wish, the contest also offers a few recommended topics. This year's writing prompts included "A visit back in time," "I can make a difference," "the person I admire most," "Haunted House," "the time I ate," and "Death on Popcorn Mountain."

Contests looking to get a lot of submissions from far-flung students can use postcard printing to get the word out. Postcards can be sent to schools and student homes throughout the state.

The writing contest is free to enter and prizes will be given to first, second and third place winners in each group. First place winners will take home $100, second place winners receive $50, and third place winners get $25.

Submissions can be mailed to West Virginia Writers, Inc. by March 15. Each writer can submit up to three entries.
