A group of athletes will be bringing their act out to people all across the world. An event scheduled for late January is sure to give South Charleston residents a special experience.
The Harlem Globetrotters, the team of basketball players who perform incredible tricks in addition to playing the traditional game, was created back in 1926 by Abe Saperstein and won a World Basketball Championship title just 14 years later. Two years in a row, in 1948 and 1949, the Globetrotters scored major victories over the Minneapolis Lakers. These wins opened the door for African American athletes in the NBA. In another history-making moment, Lynette Woodard joined the line-up in 1985, going on to be a pioneer for the WNBA, in addition to being the first ever woman to play as a part of a men’s pro team. Well-known players aside from Woodard include “Sweet” Lou Dunbar, Mannie Jackson, Meadowlark Lemon, Fred “Curly” Neal, and Wilt Chamberlain.
The 2023 World Tour will be coming to the Charleston Coliseum. Tickets are sold by Ticketmaster, costing from $24 to $104. Several additional experiences are available for between $23 and $200. These include interactions with players, a chance to be behind and on the court, and a lanyard with the organization’s Logo Design. The Globetrotters will be playing the Washington Generals when the event kicks off at 7:00 pm on January 24.
