Often, students learn when best when they get hands-on experience. That seems to be the case for a second grade class at Holz Elementary School, near South Charleston.
Through a program sponsored by Trout Unlimited, the 23 students are getting the chance to bring up a school of 40 trout. The fish live in an aquarium located inside the classroom.
Trout Unlimit provides the cold-water aquariums to school groups and classes who express an interest in raising a school of trout. Businesses that sponsor educational programs can use Promotional Products to let teachers know about the programs and to offset costs.
According to second grade teacher Tamara Hovis, the students really enjoy spending time with and raising the trout. She told the Charleston Gazette-Mail:
“They’re so amused by the fish. They really enjoy watching them grow.”
The students are quickly learning that raising a group of trout means more than just making sure the fish get fed. The water needs to be clean, full of oxygen, and sufficiently cold. A chiller needs to be on 24 hours a day, so that the water stays at the correct temperature.
The students also need to clean the tank regularly. Special chemicals need to be put into it to control its acidity and alkalinity.
The class has a field trip to Kanawha State Forest scheduled for April 25. As part of the trip, they will set the fish free into Davis Creek.
