The pair were told that they won at the beginning of May and will travel to the nation's capital in June to receive their presidential medallions.
Buckland and Wantlin are among 161 students who were selected to be presidential scholars this year. Every year, two students are chosen from every state, plus DC, Puerto Rico, and US citizens living abroad. Another 20 student are selected as Presidential Scholars in the Arts, 20 are selected as Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education, and 15 are chosen as "at-large" scholars. Scholarship programs can use Stationery printers to create certificates to honor every student chosen for such an award.
Both Wantlin and Buckland plan on majoring in mathematics in college. Wantlin will attend Harvard University and Buckland plans on going to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Speaking to the Charleston Gazette-Mail about her award, Wantlin stated:
“This is such a huge honor. I don’t think anyone goes into this expecting to receive something like this, but I definitely put in my best effort and waited to see what happened.”
