The climate and other growing conditions in and around South Charleston are conducive to growing winter crops, and the organizers of a local competition have encouraged area gardeners to get growing now.
The 6th annual Celtic Calling Gathering is right around the corner, organized by Celtic Calling, but there is still time for area green thumbs to get involved. A Flower, Vegetable and Baked Goods Show will celebrate the talents that can be found in the community, and everyone is welcome to submit an entry.
The categories on offer will be Best Leek, Best Six Leeks, Largest Cabbage, Best Six Daffodils, and the Best Picked Garden Arrangement. Bakers can show off their talents in the shortbread and soda bread bake offs, and prizes will be awarded. The judges list and venue will be released closer to the judging date.
Friendly competitions give those who enjoy a particular pastime an opportunity to show off their skills. A company that offers Letterheads and other custom Stationery printing options will be able to craft personalized certificates to present to the winners.
The organizers have decided that leeks and daffodils will be the focus of the activity as they are the national symbols of Wales. The contest will take place on March 5, shortly after Wales’s national celebration of St. David’s Day, and its Facebook listing will have the most current details.
