The South Charleston Community Center will be holding the 44th Mountain State Karate Championships toward the end of April.
Hundreds of competitors from beginners at their first finals to elite athletes at the Black Belt level will be vying for championship status. Athletes come from the Mid-Atlantic regions of South Carolina, and North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, and New York.
The Iaido (sword work) division will have beginner, intermediate and advanced competitions. The Kata (basic karate movements) and Repechage (wild card) division will have 35 categories ranging from 5-year-old and younger boys and girls beginning, intermediate and advanced, to men and women beginners, intermediates and advanced. The Kumite (sparring) division will have the same categories as the Kata-Repechage. Kobudo (Japanese traditional weapons techniques) division will have 12 categories ranging from 9-year-old boys beginning, intermediate and advanced weapons to men and women's beginning, intermediate, and advanced. This division will also have a 35-and-older men and women's weapons category.
Proud parents and families of winners in championships like this often take pictures of their champions holding their trophies. These pictures often go to local Print shops for duplicates for close relatives and for inclusion in family newsletters for those farther away.
The 44th Mountain State Karate Championships will be held Saturday, April 25th at 601 Jefferson Road.
