South Charleston gets ready to run for its life

For more than a decade, the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Foundation has hosted a 5-mile run and 2.5-mile walk, dubbed Run for Your Life, to raise funds for and awareness of colorectal cancer.

The event returns tomorrow, June 18, with a new chairperson and goal. The CAMC has named Erin Magee, an attorney who lives near South Charleston, and a recent survivor of stage four colorectal cancer who now has ‘no evidence of disease’, as the new chair of the race.

Magee was first diagnosed in October of last year, and promised herself that, if she survived, she'd work to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of early screenings.

Being named chairperson of the Run for Your Life race helps her to fulfill her promise. The race was created in 2004 by Marina Hendricks, who lost her fiancé to colorectal cancer in 2002. Organizations such as these can create Brochures to distribute to participants and spectators at the event to inform them of the value of cancer screenings and the organization’s mission.

This year's race is being held along with the Smoke on the Water Chili Cook-off, which is a fundraiser for HospiceCare. More than 70 cooks are expected to show off their chili recipes at the event.

Last year's race raised more than $72,000 and had more than 430 participants, ranging in age from 8 to 78.
