The Angel Tree program, sponsored by the Salvation Army, provides people in need with a bit of support over the holiday season, and the organization has already started taking applications for the program in the South Charleston area, along with several other counties in West Virginia.
On the first day of signups, 60 people came in to apply. It is anticipated that the number of people who come in to apply today and tomorrow will be twice that. The organization could use printing services to prepare the applications and to help spread the word about the program.
Along with welcoming applications for the Angel Tree program, the Salvation Army is encouraging members of the community to donate to help others. Darrell Kingsbury, a major with Salvation Army, told WSAZ that the organization was expecting to see 10 to 15% more people apply this year. Although local businesses offer support for the program, it is expected that donations will be lower this year.
People hoping to sign up for the Angel Tree Program in Kanawha County, which includes Charleston and South Charleston, have until tomorrow, October 10, to apply. Applications are accepted in person at the Salvation Army in Charleston, on Tennessee Avenue. Application hours are between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm and between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm.
