When people dine out near South Charleston this month, splurging on dessert will be about more than just enjoying a guilty pleasure thanks to a new partnership.
A number of restaurants in Charleston, South Charleston, and the surrounding area have teamed up with Literacy Volunteers of Kanawha County. Information Table Tents set up at each restaurant throughout the month will let diners know more about what the all-volunteer organization does and how people can help out. The restaurants can use area printing services to produce the table tents.
Along with giving diners information about Literacy Volunteers, local restaurants are offering something that sweetens the deal – a portion of the proceeds from orders of desserts will be donated to the nonprofit.
Literacy Volunteers provides tutors in reading and writing to people over the age of six. The goal of the organization is "to wipe out illiteracy", according to the fundraising committee chairwoman, Susan Leffler. Along with having about 35 teams of students and tutors that focus on reading and writing, the organization also offers free English as a Second Language classes.
Usually, the organization works with a budget of just $4,000. Due to the addition of an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer this year, it needs to increase this figure to $6,000.
Restaurants participating in the fundraiser include South Charleston's Happy Days Cafe, Fifth Quarter, Wellington's Cafe, and Lola's and Harding's Family Restaurant, all of which are in Charleston.Get a Free Quote for Table Tents
