A Charleston native who got her start working on local radio program will be recognized with a Gracie award from the Alliance for Women in Media later this month.
No doubt being rooted for by those from South Charleston, Joni Deutsch, 26, will find herself in the company of actors such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Reese Witherspoon when she attends the ceremony on June 27 in New York City. Organizations that give out awards can use brochure printing to produce pamphlets describing each of the winners and what they have done.
Deutsch was chosen for the award because of an interview she conducted with Alasha Al-Qudwah, a violinist. The interview aired during the second season of the podcast series '30 Days of #WVmusic'. Along with Al-Qudwah, Deutsch featured other musicians from West Virginia on the series.
Deutsch got her start working for West Virginia Public Radio in 2013, when she was an intern for the program ‘Mountain Stage’. She later went on to become the youngest person to host the program and was the first person to host it twice.
Deutsch has since left West Virginia and is now working at a National Public Radio affiliate in North Carolina.
The Alliance for Women in Media gives out the Gracie awards to women working across the media. The organization began giving out the awards in 1975. In 1997, the awards were named the Gracies, after comedian Gracie Allen.
