South Charleston area newspaper raises over $20,000 for charity

The holiday season is not just about receiving presents, decorating, and enjoying lots of sweets. A local newspaper has not forgotten that it is also about helping others and giving.

The Charleston Gazette, a paper that covers Charleston, South Charleston, and the surrounding area in West Virginia, encourages people to remember to give during the holidays by sponsoring an annual charity drive. So far this year, the drive has raised over $21,300. During the first week, the drive raised $8,100. The second week brought in an additional $13,200.

The Gazette covers the all of the administrative costs of the charity drive. That means that all the money donated by people goes directly to the various charities the drive supports. Charities benefiting from this year's drive include the Salvation Army, Manna Meal, and Covenant House. Manna Meal provides food and hot meals to the hungry, while Covenant House provides shelter, a place for people to pick up food and clothing, and a place to get a hot shower. Other charities supported by the annual drive include Daymark, Jericho House, and Heart and Hand.

The newspaper is accepting donations by mail or online. People can pay via credit card or Paypal online. There is also the option to make a donation in honor or memory of a person. People can also make an anonymous donation if they do not want their name listed among the donors. South Charleston printing companies could be called upon at the end of the charity drive to produce a banner listing all of the donors who contributed to this year's drive.
