The United Way of Central West Virginia's Day of Caring is still nearly two months away, but the organization is requesting that volunteers sign up now for the annual event.
The goal of the day is to take on projects that the United Way has not been able to complete yet, or has not had the funding to complete. A number of nonprofit organizations in Charleston and South Charleston regularly participate in the event, such as West Virginia Health Right, which is a clinic that offers free healthcare services to people who need them. Another program that has participated in the past is the raised bed community garden, sponsored by Tyler Mountain/Cross Lanes Community Services.
In years past, more than 700 people have volunteered to help out on the Day of Caring. People are welcome to register to volunteer on their own or can work with a group. For example, groups of students from area high schools and teams of employees from Dow Chemicals have volunteered together during past events.
The United Way can use a local printing company to help spread the word about signing up for the Day of Caring. The fee is $10 for volunteers, which goes toward food and a T-shirt. Registration is currently open on the United Way's website. Organizations that want to register a volunteer project should do so by August 3. The last day for volunteers to sign up is August 14.
