National Council on the Arts pays first visit to WV

For nearly 30 years, the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body for the National Endowment for the Arts, has met each year in Washington, DC. Recently, the council decided that a change of venue was in order, and decided to hold its annual meeting at the West Virginia Culture Center, near South Charleston.

Members of the National Council on the Arts come from all over the US. During their annual meeting, they have a chance to watch performances and presentations and to vote on funding recommendations. For some of them, the meeting was the first time they had ever stepped foot in West Virginia.

Diana Rodriquez is a councilmember who visited WV for the first time. She called her experience there an "eye-opening one," praising the amount of support the state provides for the arts.

Organizations that provide funding for the arts and for other endeavours can use Stationery printers to create certificates to give to the recipients of the funding.

Between 2013 and 2017, the state received nearly $4m in arts grants. In 2018, the NEA has given more than $834,000 to programs in WV, in the form of eight grants. Visiting West Virginia gave the council members a chance to see the effect of arts funding on local communities.

Tony Chauveaux, the deputy chairman for programs and partnerships for the NEA, said.




"For the first time in 27 years, our councilmembers are seeing on the ground, in West Virginia, the results of arts funding."
