Nearly 40 students from towns and counties all over West Virginia, including South Charleston, showed off their spelling talents last Saturday, March 3.
The winner of the Gazette-Mail Regional Spelling Bee was Delaney Mitchell, an eighth grade student from Raleigh County. Speaking to the Gazette-Mail, Delaney explained that winning the regional spelling bee was a dream she had had since the fourth grade. She came third place last year.
The word that took Delaney to the winner's podium this year was ‘cirrocumulus’ -- a type of cloud shape that Forms at high altitude. Delaney was not familiar with the word, but still managed to spell it correctly, taking clues from words she was familiar with, such as cumulus.
Organizers of spelling bees and other school competitions can use promotional Pens and products to give the students who participate a prize to take home, even if they are not among the top three winners.
Delaney, as the first place winner, receives an weeklong trip to the nation's capital, all expenses paid, where she will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She was also given a membership to the premium edition of Britannica Online for one year and received $2,500 to be put in a SMART529 savings account for college.
The second place winner, Mark Imbing, a classmate of Delaney's, won a copy of Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and $150 cash. Jonathan Bushay, the third place winner, took home $75 in cash.
