Memorial Day near South Charleston turns 40 this month, bringing with it a chance to enjoy folk musical and celebrate the state's cultural heritage.
The West Virginia Division of Culture and History hosts the Vandalia Gathering, which gets underway in a couple of weeks and continues for three days. The organization could use Brochures to highlight the musical acts and other events taking place during the folk festival.
The musical performances will include a tribute to the former host of ‘Music from the Mountains’, Joe Dobbs. The owner of the Fret 'n Fiddle store, Dobbs passed away in 2015. There will also be a tribute to Elmer Rich, a local fiddler.
Along with performances, there will be a number of musical competitions. On Saturday and Sunday, pickers and other musicians will have the chance to show off their mandolin, old-time banjo, old-time fiddle, flat-pick guitar, bluegrass banjo, and lap dulcimer skills.
The festival will also feature a few activities designed just for kids. The Three Rivers Avian Center will present ‘Birds of Prey’ while students from a local elementary school will present ‘Guitars in the Classroom’. There will also be scavenger hunts, crafts, and storytelling. People of all ages can participated in the square dance and ethnic dance demonstrations, which are to be held in the Great Hall.
The Vandalia Gathering starts at the Capitol Complex on the evening of Friday, May 27 and continues through Sunday, May 29. The event is free.
