A typical family visit has turned into a business for Stephanie and Josh Woody, a couple near South Charleston, who have opened a donut company this month.
The pair saw an Amish family selling doughnuts at a farmers' market while visiting Stephanie's family. They made the doughnut business look easy, and the couple thought that opening their own doughnut trailer would be a fun and fulfilling side gig.
Things started to come together in May when they found a vintage camping trailer for sale. Recent weeks have seen them open their company, Vandalia Donut Company, to the public.
The trailer doubles as the doughnut shop's storefront and bakery. Everything is prepared in the tiny 6-by-10-foot space. Since the shop is literally on wheels, the couple is able to move it from place to place.
To keep a sense of place, even with a portable bakery, the couple decided to use local ingredients in their doughnuts. The flavors are also inspired by Appalachia.
Owners of small businesses can use printing companies to spread the word about their work and keep in touch with customers. Since Vandalia Donut Company travels, it is particularly important that it lets people know where they will be next.
Their next scheduled appearance will be at the grand opening of the new exhibitions at the Clay Center on November 18. The couple also hopes to find a permanent spot in Charleston to set up shop on a regular basis.
