Dewey bids a fond farewell to South Charleston

A temporary resident of the South Charleston area was recently able to make his way back to the sea.

The South Carolina Aquarium had been caring for Dewey, who is a loggerhead sea turtle that had been caught in a net back in June and become ill. He was taken to the facility, where he was nursed back to health in its sea turtle hospital. He was given IV fluids, as well as medications and food to help him get well.

It was decided that he had recovered enough to be released back into the ocean at Folley Beach County Park. Reports indicate that he was able to navigate through the sand and that, once he reached the water, he was easily able to swim away. A representative of the aquarium noted that so far this year, they have cared for and released 27 sea turtles. She also mentioned that they have 15 currently in the hospital, and 13 of them are loggerheads. They can be quite large, weighing up to 180lb.

There are believed to be seven species of sea turtles, and all of them are endangered. The aquarium is hoping these efforts will help to bring the species they care for back from the brink.
