On November 14, Debby Weinstein, the CEO of the YWCA that serves the Charleston and South Charleston areas, will be presented with the Urbanite of the Year award.
Every year, Charleston Main Streets chooses one member of the community who has enriched the urban core of the city through their work. Usually, the award recipient is kept under wraps until the day of award ceremony, but the organization decided to switch things up this year and announced the winner early.
A central committee from Main Streets chose Weinstein for this year's award, according to Ric Cavender, the director of the organization.
Weinstein has been the CEO of the Charleston YWCA for more than two decades. Before that, she served as the CEO of a YWCA in Missoula, Montana. Before joining the Y, she was the director of Sojourner's Shelter, also in Charleston. Sojourner's Shelter offers assistance to women and children who have experienced domestic violence and abuse.
During her time with the YWCA, Weinstein has focused on restoring buildings that have been neglected and that have contributed to blight in the area while also working to help women and children who are experiencing homelessness.
The Urbanite Awards Ceremony will take at the Women's Club of Charleston starting at 6:00 pm on November 14.
