Charleston local who found Twitter fame releases book

A Charleston man has published a book based on his successful social media account.

In 2015, Matt Nelson started a Twitter account devoted to dogs. Flash forward to 2017, and the account is still going strong – so much so that it is now Nelson's full-time job.

Both the Twitter account and the book are products of Nelson's business, WeRateDogs, LLC. The book's title is "#WeRateDogs: The Most Hilarious and Adorable Pups You've Ever Seen." The format of the book is similar to the Twitter account (@dog_rates). It features a photo of a dog, plus a caption and a rating.

Nelson, a graduate of George Washington High School near South Charleston, got the idea for the Twitter account and eventual book during his freshman year of college. He wanted to create a funny account on the social network. Initially, he tweeted more than 20 times each day and quickly racked up more than 100,000 followers. Today, the account has millions of followers and regularly publishes photos of dogs submitted by those followers.

Authors of new books often use print companies to help promote their work. #WeRateDogs will be available at local bookstores, including Books A Million and Taylor Books, and is also available through Amazon.com.

Additionally, Nelson will be signing his book at Taylor Books in Charleston on November 25 at 2:00 pm.
