Near the end of July, the Bakery, a concert venue that puts on all-ages shows near South Charleston, had to cancel one of its shows.
The Charleston Fire Department closed the venue down for the weekend, noting that there were several violations of the building's code. After the cancellation, ticket prices were refunded and the governing board of the venue had to scramble to find new locations for the remaining shows that weekend.
A few weeks later, interested people gathered at the venue to learn more about what they could do to help save it from future closures. Around 40 people attended the meeting to discuss options and solutions.
Tom Martin, the director of the board for the Bakery, noted that they had fallen behind on repair tasks, due a limited amount of funding. The decision was made to host a few shows at the venue to raise money for the repairs, but the closure by the city got in the way of that plan.
Venues and organizations that are seeking to raise money can use flyer printing to let the public know what the project is and what needs to be down. The board of the Bakery estimates that it needs around $12,000 to make the repairs. The funds will mostly be used to purchase materials.
They are also hoping that skilled workers, such as electricians, will come forward to donate their time and services. Gift cards to stores such as Lowe's are also appreciated.
