The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 Brownfields Success Award has been given to the city of Watertown.
Announcements of such major awards are often made known throughout a community with flyer printing.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) nominated the city for this award. The award celebrates the brownfield development project at Bentzin Family Town Square, which has become an anchor for the downtown corridor of the community. Funding for the project was made possible by the Wisconsin Assessment Monies program of the DNR, a Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant, and $2 million from additional sources.
The Bentzin Family Town Square spans one acre on West Main Street and was once home to a restaurant, pharmacy, hair salon, karate studio, and the offices and printing press of the local newspaper. Prior to the cleanup and demolition at the site, it was found that the property had soil that was contaminated with petroleum.
The town square provides a central place for activities in the community and a place for gatherings such as musical performances, food trucks. and markets. It also serves as a portal to the Rock River, offering an accessible kayaking and boat launch.
An Import Report from 2022 by city officials said that this development has already increased activity in the downtown area, created many opportunities for employment, and encouraged other businesses in the area to improve their property.
