A new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine has been installed at Watertown Regional Medical Center.
This technology features a wider opening for the increased comfort of patients, improved processing speeds so patients spend less time in the machine, and enhanced resolution for more consistent and clearer images.
The new MRI will also allow for scans to take place in certain areas of the body that were not possible with the previous machine. In addition, urology patients and many others will benefit, as they will now be able to remain in Watertown for their scans. The wider opening of the machine will not only increase the comfort of patients but will accommodate patients of many different shapes and sizes, and will minimize feelings of claustrophobia.

Medical Director of Diagnostic Services and radiologist at Watertown Regional Medical Center, Dr. Jeff Van Beek, expressed his excitement about this new device and what it will offer Watertown and the surrounding communities. He compared the improved quality image to those that have taken place with cell phones and televisions over the last 10 to 15 years. He added that the abilities to diagnose issues will improve, ultimately leading to a more precise plan of treatment.
