Construction on the Main Street Bridge in Watertown will now begin a year earlier than originally planned, with 2025 now the expected year in which it will commence.

The pedestrian walkway had been closed in March as its supporting beams were in poor condition. The rest of the bridge has been considered safe for travel. Mayor Emily McFarland said that this bridge is important for the city and this newly discovered condition requires that the replacement of the bridge be expedited.
Craig Thompson, secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT), said that work on the bridge could begin as early as next year, potentially. The state is hiring an outside consultant to design the new bridge to accelerate the start of the project.
To prepare for the traffic that will need to be rerouted, work will begin on the rehabilitation of the Cady Street Bridge. The state has given the city an amount of $375,000 to help with the rehabilitation of the bridge. While the Main Street Bridge is closed, the Cady Street bridge will handle most of the traffic.
McFarland said that the city is going to keep working on its responsibilities related to the project so that when the DOT is ready, the city will not be the barrier to the start of the work.
