Bid process to begin on Watertown library renovations

The Board of Trustees of the Watertown Public Library are currently seeking construction bids for the addition to and the remodeling of the library.

Jonathan Lampe, president of the Board, expressed his optimism about the schedule of these renovations. He said that as the library has been closed and is now bringing back limited operations, the city and the library are picking up where it left off.

The new structure will include the current 22,000-square-foot “Carnegie” library and an addition of 16,000 square feet. The existing library will have a revamped area for teens and the current adult services collection. The addition will have a large meeting room, the TalkReaPlay Center, and the children’s area.

There will also be a new entry on the south side, a new parking lot that will be able to hold between 30 and 40 vehicles, and a book drop-off lane. Printing services are often used to provide more details on such projects and their features.

The architecture of the addition will be matched to the current library and there will be a glass connection that will link both buildings. The use of glass will be a major feature of the renovations to allow for natural light to enter the space.

The scheduled groundbreaking is the early fall of this year, with the re-opening of the new building about 16 months later.
