String quartet to offer an evening with Haydn

The St. Lawrence String Quartet will be presenting an evening of chamber music, which it calls “Haydn Discovery”.

Joseph Haydn is often considered the father of the string quartet, and his work has become the standard “opening act” for many string quartet performances. Members of the St. Lawrence String Quartet will talk about the genius of the famous composer, and follow up with a full performance, most of which will consist of Haydn’s work.

The performance will include Haydn’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 76, No. 3 ‘Emperor’. After intermission the quartet will play ‘Second Quartet’ by John Adam and end the evening with String Quartet in Eb-Major, Op. 33, No. 2 (Hob.III.38) ‘The Joke’, also a famous Haydn opus.

The St. Lawrence String Quartet is composed of two violins played by Geoff Nuttall and Owen Dalby, the viola will be played by Lesley Robertson, and the cello will be played by Christopher Costanza. The group is Stanford University’s Ensemble-in-Residence.
