Science and the planet discussed at yearly conference

The 45th Annual Earth Day will be recognized in Madison later this month in the form of the Ninth Annual Nelson Institute Earth Day Conference.

This year’s theme will be Hard Science, Tough Choices: Shaping the Future on a Rapidly Changing Planet. The keynote speaker will be Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is the director of New York’s American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium and host of PBS show ‘Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey’.

The conference will address the environmental challenges facing today’s world. Some of the critical issues to be discussed will be climate change, transportation, energy, food security, and water quality, as well as what role science should play in disseminating information.

A speech on ‘Creating more Livable Cities: Lessons from Chicago and Detroit’ will start the morning. Following that, there will be two sessions—the first will offer six concurring programs. After lunch, the afternoon session will be composed of six more choices of programs. Afterwards there will be a refreshment break, guests can view the exhibit hall displays. To conclude the conference, Mr. Degrasse Tyson’s keynote speech will be entitled: Science as a Way of Knowing. Guests will want to remember to bring their digital Business Cards.

The conference is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, 1 John Nolen Drive, Madison. Check-in is 7:30 am, with the welcome speech starting at 9:00 am.
