Sunday, January 19, for one performance only, Madison Symphony Orchestra and American Players Theatre actors will be presenting a Beyond the Score series.
Titled “Sergei Prokofiev Symphony No 5: Pure Propaganda?“, it will be a multimedia presentation and will include the complete Sergei Prokofiev Symphony No. 5.
The first part of the program will be a theatrical presentation of the life and times of Sergei Prokofiev as he experienced life in America and in his homeland USSR, and his belief that music should be beautiful, strong and heroic. The actors will present short vignettes, visual projections accompanied by live musical examples from the orchestra.
The program begins with a discussion of how Russian composers, going back three generations, helped develop the composer’s musical acumen through his young life and later into adulthood. The narration then proceeds to the composer’s stint in the United States and his return to Russia after WWII. His Symphony No. 5 was considered a musical celebration of the end of that war.
The entire symphony will end the evening.
The conductor will be John DeMain. Actors will be James Ridge, Marcus Truschinski, Colleen Madden, and Sarah Day. Dan Lyons will be the pianist. Patrons of the arts often get tickets to events such as this right after the performance program brochure printing.
The Prokofiev evening will be at the Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State Street, and the curtain will go up at 2:30 pm. Single tickets run from $16 to $70.
