Madison has earned yet another accolade to add to its list of top 10 rankings - it now holds the title of the number one city for public toilets, according to the Public Toilet Index.
A 2021 report by British company QS Bathrooms Supplies shows that for every 100,000 US citizens, there are eight public toilets. Madison boasts the highest number of public toilets among U.S. cities, with 35 per 100,000 people. Iceland takes the top spot globally with 56 public toilets per 100,000 individuals. On the other hand, New York City only has four public toilets per 100,000 people.
According to Eric Knepp, the Superintendent of Madison Parks, this ranking serves as further proof that Madison is an excellent place to call home.
According to him, public restrooms rank high among the most requested amenities by the public to improve city parks. The residents of Madison and nearby towns like Fitchburg are keen on having additional public restrooms, and they also want the existing washrooms in parks to remain open for longer durations.
Residents also need to know where toilets are, which is where signage and local Print shops can help.
Ann Shea, who represents the Madison Parks Division, says only a limited number of park restrooms and portable facilities are accessible throughout the year.
