Local project builds Christmas tree labyrinth

The How Lovely Are Thy Branches Temporary Labyrinth Project will be constructing a temporary 89-foot walking labyrinth out of discarded Christmas trees, ready for the pubic to use towards the end of this month.

Madison Arts Commission Blink Program commissioned the installation to local artist Lillian Sizemore, who is the labyrinth’s creator, designer, and facilitator.

Madison residents are asked to leave their live trees and holiday greenery from January 2 to 29 at the drop-off site beside the parking lot close to the Biergarten on Walter Street.

The trees will be stripped and cut into varied lengths to make the knee-high pathways. In the middle of the labyrinth will be “The Moss Mound” where guests may leave small, natural offerings.

An Opening Day Celebration is being held Sunday, January 30 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. A Glowing Hoop Procession will begin around 4:30 pm after an illuminated hoop performance. Attendees are to bring flashlights, headlamps, glow sticks, LED candles, solar lights, or any other non-open-flame light. Taco Local will have a food truck on site for guests to purchase chili, warm drinks, and snacks.

Craig Wilson, a Kite Aerial photographer, will be filming the event. Pictures taken on the ground can go to local Stationery printers to be made into personalized Stationery or Letterheads.

Following its opening, the installation will be open to the public through March 1 at Olbrich Park Beach, 3527 Atwood Avenue.
