Local lakes to host Chinese boat races

Both rowers and spectators alike are invited to the upcoming Madison Capital Lakes Dragonfest boat racing festival.

Entries are large, gaily painted Hong Kong-style dragon boats holding 20 rowers – 10 to a side – each rowing to a cadence set by a drummer, who sits in the back of the boat and beats out a rhythm to set the pace.

Local teams will provide the muscle for the event; each will have 20 paddlers, three alternates, a drummer, and one steersperson. The course will be 250 meters long. Participants will be given a prep course on how to row their boat the day before the race. More than a dozen teams have registered thus far, and there’s still room for more.

Pre-registration and practice are greatly advised for participants. Supporters may want to get banner printing done for their team. For those watching, entertainment will be provided on two stages. One will be presenting a welcome, the National Anthem, and then a flag and petal ceremony presented by local Girl Scout Troop 2259. The other stage will feature Rotation Nation-hoop-a-fitness group, Jester Rocks, Taiko Drummers from West High School, Field & James, the X-tension Dance Company, and the closing and awards ceremonies.

The races will start at 8:30am on June 21st at Capitol Lakes Vilas (Henry) Park, 1602 Vilas Park Drive.
