In a couple of weeks, Heavy Bombers Weekend 2016 will be celebrating aviation history.
The three-day event will have attendees in the air, riding in historic planes, and viewing static displays on the ground during the ground tours.
Rides in 21 classic planes such as the CAF B-29 Superfortress ‘Fifi’, the EAA B-17 ‘Aluminum Overcast’, the CAF B-25J Mitchell ‘Yellow Rose’ will take place in the mornings if the weather cooperates. The ground tours, featuring the Eurocopter EC 135 and the Bell UH-1 Huey, experimental aircraft displays, and EAA B-17 Official Tour merchandise will take place in the afternoons.
The single-engine warbirds will be taking passengers for air-rides all day long. The warbird pilots and handlers hope that those with ground tour tickets will enjoy watching, smelling, listening, and feeling these special planes. At noon on Saturday, there will be a 100 Beechcraft Bonanzas Fly-Over. Plane enthusiasts may want to take pictures of their favorite aircraft for possible later poster printing.
Food vendors such as Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, Famous Dave’s BBQ and Country Kettle Corn will have food, beverages, and summer treats for purchase. The airport’s PA system will be blaring out aircraft history, and music of the 1940s.
The event is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, July 22 through the 24, from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport, 1716 West Airport Road, Janesville.
