If anyone in Janesville needs an excuse to get outdoors during April, the City of Janesville is offering a few crowd-free activities.
On Wednesdays in April, walkers are invited to explore the 13 Historic Districts here in town. Some are Columbus Circle, Look West and Court House Hill.
Walking guides are available at THE UW-Madison Library Digital Collections on its website. The Clio app, created by the Rock County Historical Society, has posted a list of over 80 historical sites that lie within a five-mile radius and in Janesville’s downtown.
On Thursdays, locals are encouraged to take Selfie Scavenger Hunts. These outdoor experiences are divided into four categories - Murals, Monuments and Memorials, Statues and Sculptures, and Historical Markers.
In total, fifteen entries are listed in the Mural category. Some are animal-related such as Dog Bone, Origami Birds, Black Hawk, Two Horses, and Butterflies. Doty Mill Alley depicts various locations around town. Other murals include rock stars, American flag, and General Motors iconic cars.
The Monuments and Memorials category includes seven entries with war and war-related themes. Sculptures and Statues contain 13 pieces. Some entries are Bessie the Cow, Bubbler, Resilience, Biota, Calligraph, Cycle, and Wings. The 10 Historical Markers have themes such as circus, the Milton House, First State Fair, and Route of Abraham Lincoln.
Pictures taken of a town’s local interesting or historical sites and structures are often taken to local Stationery printers to be made into notecards.
