Janesville gets outdoors in January

Many Janesville runners will be starting the new year a by participating in the New Year’s Bash Dash Run/Walk taking place on New Year's Day. Others will be headed to Rock River Park.

Both the 5K and the two-mile walk will be just-for-fun runs at the New Year’s Bash Dash Run/Walk. Each will cost $10 and start at 10:00 am. Registration will end December 31, at noon.

Later in January, Rock River Heritage Park will be the location of a Candlelight Hike. The half-mile loop will be along the formerly named BSA Camp Indian Trails. Firepits will be available for hikers to warm themselves, and treats will also be on offer. Donations of $5 for each hiker are recommended and proceeds will go to improving Rock County Parks.

Candlelight Hike at Rock River Heritage Park will take place January 21 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Rock River Heritage Park, 5801 N River Road.

Also, families are encouraged to take a Winter StoryWalk along the Jolyn Beeman Trail at the Robert O. Cook Memorial Arboretum, 3550 W County Highway A, sometime in January. This time, the winter walk story will be local author Jamie A. Swenson’s We Want Snow! A Wintry Chant. The story will be presented page by page on signposts along the half mile loop. Winter StoryWalk will be available from December 21 through March 20.

Stationery printers often use pictures of winter scenes taken during events such as these for their winter note card sets.
