Janesville celebrates National Night Out

Residents in Janesville can unite to have fun and help prevent crime next week.

National Night Out 2014 will be celebrated at the local police station. There will be refreshments, activities for children, and demonstrations from both fire and police stations. Guests can also get a close-up look at an ambulance or police car.

Anyone who wants to work up a sweat can sign up for the 'Run Against Crime 5K'. The race benefits crime prevention organizations. From 5:00 pm until 6:45 pm, runners can pick up their packet and register. The race begins at 7:00 pm and awards will be distributed at 8:00 pm. Prior to yesterday, runners could register online for $25 and receive a race T-shirt. Registration is now $30 and may or may not include a shirt.

National Night Out is a nationwide event that promotes community and safety in a fun environment. In 1984, the event was introduced as an effort to prevent crime, and provides a time when community neighborhood watches can be encouraged and informed. In Janesville, local flyer printing services have probably been busy making handouts for the event.

The festivities will happen on August 5 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The free, family-friendly event takes place at the Janesville Police Department located at 100 North Jackson Street. For more information call (608) 755-3134 and ask for Officer Sullivan.
