The restaurant on Williamson Street is called Sultan and it does not require guests to tip their servers.
The restaurant’s owner, Sultan Ahmed, does not believe in tipping culture and wants to change it. He was inspired to implement the idea after seeing how restaurants in other countries operate. He feels that he should not be in business if he cannot pay his employees properly and the customers should not be left with the burden. Print shops can be hired to provide restaurants with Menus.
The Pakistani restaurant’s staff have been instructed to tell customers that tipping is not required. The Sultan will pay his employees a rate of $20 per hour and full-time staff will be eligible for a profit share worth 5%.
According to Susan Quam, the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Executive, the model has seen varying levels of success. She went on to say:
“We currently still see now that a vast majority of the individuals who are working in bartending and serving in other tipped positions in the hospitality world want to keep the system the way it is because they like the ability to have unlimited earning potential.”
However, customers from Fitchburg and Madison may prefer the no-tipping rule, and Quam predicts that the restaurant sector will continue to experiment with this model.
