Community event offers hands-on learning for families

A public safety-focused gathering in Fitchburg will provide families with practical education through interactive demonstrations and activities.

Created by the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin–South Central in partnership with a regional child safety coalition, the event is designed to promote awareness and preparedness across a range of everyday situations.

The program will feature multiple learning stations where attendees can move freely and engage with safety professionals. Topics include fire prevention, pedestrian awareness, water-related precautions, and guidance on interacting safely in both physical and digital environments. Participants will also have the opportunity to view emergency response equipment, including a fire vehicle, in a controlled setting without active alarms.

Additional activities will focus on emergency communication skills, including how to respond during a 911 call, as well as introductory instruction in life-saving techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Families can also explore child passenger safety practices and assemble basic emergency supply kits. Therapy animals will be present to demonstrate safe interactions with pets, adding another educational component for younger attendees.

Organizers emphasize accessibility and engagement, offering take-home materials and light refreshments to support continued learning beyond the event.

As with many community outreach programs, organizers often use banner printing to display organizer names and guide attendees throughout the venue.

Admission is free, and registration is available. The event will take place on Sunday, May 3 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Fitchburg Fire Department, 5791 Lacy Road.
