County approves joint user agreement

The Dane County Board decided this month to accept an Airport Joint Use Agreement which means that the Air National Guard will be taking over fire and rescue responsibilities.

According to a press release from the county, federal law compels Dane County airports in places such as Fitchburg to enable the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, and transitory government airplanes to utilize taxiways, runways, and other airport infrastructure.

In exchange for being able to use Dane County Regional Airport's facilities, the Department of Military Affairs, and the National Guard Bureau decided to commit to a deal under which the State of Wisconsin and the United States would preserve airport facilities exclusively for federal and state aircraft. They will also offer 24/7 fire protection, as well as crash rescue services for both government and civil aircraft situations. These are nationally mandated services that Dane County would have had to fund itself, according to the resolution. Safety-related signage can be made with assistance from Print shops.

Patrick Miles, the County Board Chair, said:

“We want to ensure that people are not further exposed to PFAS contaminated water. The federal government has a plan to transition to PFAS-free firefighting foam. The board will be monitoring the progress of that transition.”

He also pointed out that the agreement combines public safety requirements, such as crash rescue services and fire protection, with responsibility should anything go wrong.
