The Fitchburg city council met recently and went over a few pressing matters, such as the need for a new police building.

The city alders have already expressed the urgent need for a new police services building in Fitchburg. While they reached a consensus on the importance of the project, there were disagreements on the best approach to undertake the building process.

A number of alders were in favor of endorsing a resolution to engage Pepper Construction for the police building project. Proponents argued that this step would initiate the building process and facilitate public meetings between Pepper Construction and the alders. Expressing his concerns, District 3 Alder Jay Allen voiced his belief that the process was proceeding too swiftly. His apprehensions were about the consideration of only one company bidding for a contract valued at over $500,000, and that the process had become “a train that’s rolling,” despite the council, who bear financial responsibility, having little control over the proceedings.

Allen went on to emphasize that he remained unconvinced that enough consideration had been given to the location and how the building would officially be used. He pointed out the possibility of wanting to utilize it for purposes beyond police services alone.
