City seeks public opinion on park upgrades

The Parks Division in Madison has started a program that aims to get public opinions on how to update a master plan for Reindahl Park.

The park covers 91 acres and is located on Portage Road. The park has been evolving slowly but steadily since the master plan was greenlit in 2013. The master plan detailed plans to put up a splash park, a cricket park, a sewer line, and make improvements to the tennis courts. Graphic design could be used to illustrate a master plan like this.

The city wishes to amend the master plan in order to make room for what will be called the Imagination Center. The Imagination Center would cover 16,000 square feet and would require that some trees and an old shelter be removed. The city also wishes to replace one of the playgrounds.

Some parties are questioning whether the city took enough time considering alternative locations for the Imagination Center. Those opposed to the current plan feel that the Imagination Center could be built on a site outside the park where it can be a mixed-use facility that has commercial space as well as housing. The upcoming program will re-evaluate the plan for the Imagination Center and take into consideration what visitors want for the future of the park.

The park already has a high number of users from places like Madison and nearby Fitchburg, and offers facilities for soccer, basketball, cricket, and tennis, as well as community gardens.
