Wainwright Avenue is a road that runs between the school’s main building and the new building where the new school will be located. The City of Burlington had previously made it clear that the road will remain exactly as it is, however, the board is now open to the possibility of abandoning Wainwright Avenue completely. According to Superintendent Steve Plank:
“It’s still in its early stages…it may or may not happen.”
Plank also said that if the board decides to close the street, he would ask for feedback on how the space should be used. Abandoning the road would give the school a lot of space to work with and build on. Getting rid of the street would also get rid of some of the issues associated with the street such as keeping the barricades closed while school is in session.
The developers hope to add a football field and other outdoor playing areas to the project if Wainwright Avenue is abandoned. Some board members would prefer to see the space used for a play area to replace the one torn down at the beginning of the construction project.
