A Dollar General Store that was proposed to be opened in the town of Burlington will have to find a new location after the Burlington Town Board rejected the proposal.
The 9,100-square-foot store was going to be opened near Bohners Lake. It would have been Burlington’s second Dollar General, however the Town Board unanimously voted against it because that was the Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation. The development’s plan was solid and it would have bought tax revenue to the area, but the residents of the area did not support the plan.
Ralph Rice, the Town’s Chairman, stated that:
“It would have definitely brought in some revenue for the town. It would have taken the area and changed it, but the people just didn’t want it. That’s what the people of Burlington want. They want it open…you have to respect that.”
A large group of residents attended the town meeting to oppose the plan. They came with a petition that had more than 200 signatures against the new store, some arguing that the land is zoned for residential purposes. Poster printing is sometimes uses by protestors who wish to get their point across.
The developers have accepted the board’s decision, and are confident that the town board will approve its plans when it finds a location that everybody is happy with.
