Only one seat is being contested in the City of Burlington’s elections.
The seat that is up for grabs is the one for District 1. Alderman Theresa Meyer is the incumbent and she will be taking on Casey Kemper. Meyer is an Air Force Veteran and Kemper works as an art teacher.
Meyer and Kemper made it through the primaries which were held in February. Meyer was first with 89 votes while Kemper’s 68 votes put her in second. Jonathon Schroeder was third with 65 votes and Joann Koenecke was fourth with 55 votes, but these two did not make it to the next round of voting. When the elections come round, District 1 will be the only council seat on the ticket. Municipal Judge Kelly Iselin, Aldermen Tom Preusker, Ryan Heft, and Steven Rauch, along with Mayor Jeannie Hefty will be running unopposed.
Meyer moved back to her hometown of Burlington in 2016 after retiring from the Air Force. She wanted to continue serving her community and taking on the role of Alderman felt like the best way to do that. She believes that her experience working with EMS and healthcare would help ensure that Burlington’s EMS is able to cope after the Rescue Squad was shut down.
Kemper wants the post so that he can help small businesses realize their potential while serving the community.
