Burlington club chooses new champion fibber

Burlington Liars’ Club has chosen a new person who holds the dubious honor of telling the best tall tale.

Gene O’Brien was able to spin a yarn that topped hundreds of others that were submitted from all over the world. This was the second time that he entered the contest, and his story, about having 15 brothers and sisters and never be able to sleep alone until he was married, was judged by a panel of members of the Liars’ Club to be the best fib of them all.

As a reward for being able to tell the best story, O’Brien was given a medal and now has the bragging rights to call World Champion Liar for the year. The second place spot was given to Neil Everts form New London for his submission of “It has been so dry here that the river is only running every other day".

The contest has been held each year since the early 1900s, when a group of people tried to top each other’s whoppers, and it has grown ever since. The city of Burlington has even turned it into a tourist attraction by having plaques with 14 of the best lies placed throughout the downtown area. Named ‘The Tall Tales Trail’, Brochures are available that map out the route and provide more information for those who wish to follow it.

There is no charge to enter the competition, and the only rule is an unofficial one: politicians are not allowed to participate.
