Well-known Burlington writer Carol DeMarco recently gave a presentation about her book entitled ‘Lake of the Shining Arrow: A History of Brown’s Lake’ at the Racine Public Library.

The event, which took place on the evening of June 29, was open to the public and free to attend. Those who came out had an opportunity to find out more about the stories of those who had lived around the lake, including entrepreneurs, farmers, vacationers, and even gangsters.

DeMarco attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she was granted degrees in both history and English, and had lived with her family on Brown’s lake since the mid-1970s. She got the idea for her book while investigating the legal abstract of their 100-year-old home.

While investigating the background of the area, she learned about the different people who had lived there and the role they played in its history. She found out the various historically significant events that had taken place, such as its time as a well-loved resort area to those looking an escape from the heat during the summer months.
