The Wisconsin Army National Guard has confirmed that it is to close the Burlington Armory, as it looks to consolidate its assets and reorganize the troops.
The Guard is introducing a raft of changes to its set-up, with the program set to be completed next year. As well as the Burlington location, the Guard will close its Richland Center Armory too.
A mothballed Wisconsin National Guard armory located in Berlin will be reopened to replace the two closed centers. The Berlin Armory has been closed for two years, after the unit based there was disbanded.
The Guard, speaking with Fox 11, explained that the program will improve the efficiency of the Army units, despite them being fewer in number. The Guard said it will not adversely affect its response to state emergencies.
The Mayor of Berlin, Dick Schramer, welcomed the move. Indicating it will be good to have soldiers use the building again, he said:
“Definitely. It’s always good to have a resource like that in your back pocket. I can’t say enough about them, they’re a great bunch of guys to have around,”
Any awareness-building flyer printing for the program will show a lot of changes, as battalions are merged and rebranded. A total of about 15 changes are being implemented across the state, but there will be no job losses as a result of the reorganization.
