Wisconsin lawmakers had set Wednesday, September 30, as “Bullying Awareness Day”, and a man from Burlington has decided to do his part to make a difference.
Jim Scherrer has designed and built something that he hopes will be helpful in the fight against bullying. His benches, called “buddy benches”, will be placed in schools around the state. To help fund their construction, a fundraising event was held back in June, and $60,000 was collected. So far, six of them have been built and are ready for deployment to their respective schools.
Scherrer is the CEO and president of Schrerrer Construction Company, and is at the forefront of the effort to have the benches sent out to the schools. They are designed to provide a place where someone who is being bullied, and those who are ready to help, can come together.
Scherrer noted that he has experienced bullying himself, as have others in his family, and he felt that he needed to do something that could bring about a change. He hopes to be able to put the benches in as many schools as he can.
